Balfour Beatty Rail
Balfour Beatty Rail Infrastructure Services were contracted by Network Rail to support NR rail maintenance requirements. When NR decided to move the maintenance back in-house, all of BBRIS’ records went with them, i.e. all paper documents were handed over to Network Rail.
The resulting problem was, in case of a train incident, BBRIS would have to produce a copy of the documentation record for track maintenance. An example of such a situation was the Hatfield Enquiry. So, effectively, BBRIS had to compile several million maintenance records in a very short space of time.
tsaADVET’s solution was to on-site capture the documents by scanning using high-speed colour scanners. Images were processed into a highly compacted web format that also included optical character recognition (OCR), for the typed text. Each document was uniquely identified and filed in an index structure for easy retrieval. The project captured 3.5 million pages within 18 months, and is all searchable via tsa ADVET’s CAB-i-NET Browser software.
Quote – “tsaADVET project managed the capture of all data, sending teams of staff out into our many depots to compile live information. tsaADVET were proactive in all the work they did. They really did go that extra mile for our business.” Jim Brookmyre - Commercial Director, BBRIS
Balfour Beatty Rail Projects use CAB-i-NET Explorer not only for the control of Engineering Design data in Microstation and AutoCAD,
but are also also using it for the control of documents in various departments such as HR, Business Systems etc.
CAB-i-NET Browser has been used for many years to make the Overhead Line Maintenance drawings available for
users through their web browser. As soon as new drawings are approved, these automatically become instantly
available via browser for searching, viewing and printing.
